The presence of too many mammary glands or fat tissue in men can lead to a quite disturbing problem: breast formation. This breast formation is visible in young men - especially during puberty - but can also disappear spontaneously. Breast formation is due to the circulation of certain female hormones. These hormones are also present in men during puberty. Fortunately, there are advanced techniques to treat gynecomastia (breast formation). For whom is gynecomastia treatment suitable? You are eligible for treatment for gynecomastia when the breast shape does not suit the body. You can also have complaints when wearing suspenders or a backpack, for example. Furthermore, an excess of skin, fat or glandular tissue can sometimes also cause pain complaints. How does the treatment work? The surgeon first takes photos for your medical file. He then draws the area to be treated. With this he indicates where the incisions should be placed. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or - if you wish - under general anesthesia. The type of anesthetic used depends on the type of gynecomastia and the severity of the problem. If there is an excessively present (milk) glandular disc with little adipose tissue, removing the glandular disc is often sufficient. This is done through an incision along the lower part of the areola. A small amount of glandular tissue is left under the nipple. This prevents an indented impression in this area. Liposuction is the appropriate method for gynecomastia with an excess of fat tissue, without much glandular tissue present. If there is the most common form of gynecomastia - with breast tissue with both an excessively present (milk) glandular disc and an excess of 'fatty' breast tissue - then a combined treatment is chosen. The glandular disk is removed and liposuction is applied. Consult If you are interested in a treatment, you will first come for a consultation. Our consultant gives you free advice about all the possibilities within the practice. This advice is always personally drawn up based on your complaints and wishes. During the consultation it is indicated which doctor is best for you. You will have plenty of time to ask questions and indicate what you expect from the breast reduction. A consultation is always without obligation. If you wish to be treated, a date will be set for the procedure in consultation with you. After the consultation, an appointment with the doctor takes place. He / she will look at your breasts again and assess whether the procedure is medically justified. If this is the case, the operation will be definitively scheduled. It is a legal requirement in the Netherlands that there is a 7-day waiting period between the consultation with the doctor and the operation. Book for a consultation What can I expect after the treatment? Your breasts will be swollen and blue after the procedure. As a result, you cannot properly assess the effect of the breast reduction. Once this has subsided, you will see that your breasts are smaller. There is of course bandages on the wounds and sometimes drains have been applied. These are usually removed within 24 hours. After surgery, the treated area will be sensitive. Usually a simple pain reliever is enough to relieve the discomfort. A removed mammary gland is usually sent in for pathological examination. The results are usually known at the first check-up after surgery. We recommend that you do not do heavy lifting, exercise or exercise during the first 6 weeks after surgery. Swimming and the sauna are also not recommended for the first 6 weeks. To support wound healing and prevent edema and swelling after surgery, you must wear a supportive corset / jacket for 6 weeks. Avoid full sun for the first 2 weeks after surgery.
